One Tower Remains

Brook Lopez has been ruled academically ineligible (ESPN.com) and will be unable to play for the fall quarter for Stanford. He will be able to return after the winter break if he can make the grade. Is this a big deal? Well, look at the numbers:

Lopez, a sophomore, averaged 25.2 minutes, 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game last season. He played in 26 games, making 18 starts, and was named to the 2006-07 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. Lopez was also tabbed an Honorable Mention selection on the All-Pac-10 squad.

Seeing as how Stanford was only decent last year, that’s a big loss. His brother, Robin Lopez, averaged 7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 24 minutes per game. Together they were beasts, but with only one of the twin towers I don’t think they’ll be such a force downlow now that they’ll have to keep a closer eye on fouls. Lucky for Stanford they have such powerhouses as Yale, Harvard, Northwestern State, and UC Santa Barbara on their non-conference schedule.

In other news, Ben Howland is at UCLA for the long haul.
